Aujourd'hui il ne sert plus qu'au trafic touristique.

La baie de la Somme à marée basse (3ème site de France)le chenal de la rivière serpente dans l'immensité des sables de la baie, c'est le domaine des oiseaux migrateurs (à voir le parc du Marquenterre) au fond les dunes qui bordent la baie, en limite de marée haute au pied des dunes il arrive que l'on trouve des grains d'Ambre, parait t'il, j'y vais plutôt pour les crevettes ou les coques moi.

Zwin -- Actuellement, réserve naturelle à la frontière belgo-hollandaise, paradis des oiseaux de mer.
Sur la photo, derrière les dunes se trouve la Mer du Nord.
Le mot "Zwin" vient d'un mot germanique désignant une lagune parallèle au rivage marin, comme ces mares retrouvées sur l'estran à marée basse, ou par extension un chenal, une crique d'origine naturelle au-delà des digues, entre celles-ci et la mer.
A l'origine, c'était la voie d'accès de Bruges à la mer.
Au cours des siècles, des digues ont été construites pour séparer les terres fertiles (les polders) de l'influence des marées.
D'autres modifications changèrent le paysage : construction d'un barrage et d'un remblai, assèchements progressifs pour gagner de la terre sur la mer, sédiments obstruant de plus en plus le le chenal, et finalement Bruges n'eut plus d'accès à la mer.
En 1872, suite à un accord belgo-hollandais, une dernière digue fut construite, ce qui donna la configuration actuelle de la région.

A l'entrée des fjords de Tracy et Endicott Arm, dans la large baie de Holkham, quelques beaux icebergs dérivent lentement. Un magnifique glacier, le Sumdum Glacier, empli tout un pan de montagne mais s'arrête avant de toucher l'eau.
Deux bouées de chenal balisent l'entrée pour Tracy Arm, elles sont toutes cabossées, et on comprend bien pourquoi à la vue de la quantité d'icebergs qui sont là !
At the entrance of the fjord of Tracy Arm and Endicott, in the wide Holkham Bay, some beautiful icebergs drifting slowly. A magnificent glacier, the SUMDUM Glacier, filled a whole mountain but stops before touching the water. Two buoys mark the channel entrance to Tracy Arm, they are all dented, and you understand why at the sight of the quantity of icebergs that are there!
