Les tragopans sont de gros faisans, assez lourds. Si les femelles ont un plumage modeste à dominante brune, comme beaucoup de faisanes, en revanche les mâles possèdent une livrée magnifique, à dominante rouge, fauve, brun, noir, avec de nombreuses petites taches blanches ou grises. En plus, ils arborent une courte huppe, 2 cornes charnues (ils sont surnommés "faisans cornus") et une grande bavette ou caroncule sous la gorge. Tous ces ornements sont déployés lors de la saison amoureuse, ce qui ajoute encore à l'engouement des éleveurs pour cet oiseau. Lors de la parade, les 2 cornes charnues (qui normalement sont au repos) se dressent au-dessus de la tête et atteignent 5 à 8 cm.
